CANOE BUILDING MATERIALS FOR A BEAR MOUNTAIN CANOE Wooden ComponentsPlanking - 55 to 65 pieces 1/4"x 7/8" x length of canoe plus 1 ft. (number depends on width and depth of canoe being built, should measure middle station mold on plan) about 50 bdf rough lumber western cedar most common, also used - basswood, other types of cedar, white pine or any available light weight wood - 25 to 30 lbs/cubic foot Note: the width of the planking may be from 3/4" to 7/8" (consistency in width is more important than actual number.) NEW! Inside stem - 2 pieces 3/4" x 7/8" x 30" to 40" - check plans. Most often made from three laminations 1/4" x 7/8" x appropriate length. Outside stems - 2 pieces 3/4" x 7/8" x 30" to 40" Gunnels - ash, cherry, mahogany, etc. Inwales - 2 pieces 3/4" x 7/8" x 1' longer than canoe. Outwales - 2 pieces 3/4" x 7/8"x 1' longer than canoe. Decks - ash, cherry, maple, walnut, butternut Usually 3/4" to 7/8" thick - length and width is up to builder Thwarts - ash, cherry, mahogany, etc. 3/4" x 2 1/2" or 3" w x see plans Wood plugs - if the outwales are screwed and plugged, about 70 plugs are required Seats - ash, cherry or maple seats may be purchased of a variety of materials including cane or may be made by the builder. Dowel seat spacers: 5/8" to 3/4" hardwood dowel - about 16" required Fasteners 80 - 3/4" #5 brass screws for positioning inwales 16 - 1 1/2" #8 silicon bronze screws for deck 70 - 1 1/4" #8 silicone bronze screws for attaching outwales Half oval brass stemband 2 pieces 3/8" x 3/16" x 48" 3/16" brass carriage bolts or 10/24 stainless steel machine screws for hanging seats and thwarts 4 bolts 2" long for each thwart 4 bolts for each seat - 3" to 6" long Sheathing/Cover Components Fiberglass cloth - length twice the length of the canoe being built plus a foot x 6 oz. x 60" wide Epoxy - 2 gallons resin and hardener 2 'B' packs West® #105 epoxy resin and #207 special coating hardener 1 set metering pumps 1 plastic squeegee 2 l. marine spar varnish with UV filter Strong Back 2 sheets 3/4" x 4' x 8' plywood or particle board 2 lbs 1 5/8" drywall screws 1/2 lb 1 1/4" drywall screws Mold Usually about 2 - 4'x8' sheets - 3/8" or 1/2" partical board or plywood |
