ARCHIVED FAQ'sDrawing the ShapesUsing the Original version of Canoecraft 1983 - 1999 Q I am having trouble drawing the sheer line. The modified table of offsets gives the location of the sheer line in relation to the baseline in chart A but I can't locate it in relation to the centerline. A Bend the batten around the points given in charts A and B and let it extend past that point. Measure up from the base line the distance given in the sheer line column and end the line there. Q I purchased the original Canoecraft book and am building the Peterborough canoe. In drawing the plans for the molds, I found several entries that do not appear correct. As this is the first time I have built a canoe I want to be sure that I get the correct measurements. A We get a lot of questions about the numbers in the MODIFIED tables of offsets. The modified table of offsets is a system Ted developed so that people would not have to understand the process of lofting to draw plans from the original Canoecraft. This simplification has caused some confusion. Also, Canoecraft has been reprinted so many times we cannot always catch the misprints. However, there are many reference points given and if there are misprints or reversed numbers they will be obvious when you draw out the mold section - a point way Q I have begun preparing my plans for the Peterborough from your book "Canoecraft" (third printing - 1986 - great book by the way). I have a quick question about the Modified Table of Offsets. This can be seen at the top of the charts + = +1/32" - = -1/32". What does this mean and does it have any significance to the measurements that have a + or - beside them? A This number is a traditional lofting symbol which means less or greater than 1/16". It is used because smaller numbers would be too awkward. Your batten will tell you where the point is - you don't have to figure it out. Q I'm plotting the molds for my second stripper. I am using the plans for the Redbird as outlined in the book Canoecraft. I would like to respectfully ask for a bit of assistance: In chart B, the bottom line designates the last horizontal measurement for each mold. But along with the last point there are numbers in parentheses. As an example: 15 3/8+ (13 1/8+up) or 3 (17 15/16 up). What are these dimensions inside the parentheses followed by the word 'up'? I have read and reread the instructions for drawing the plans and the answer eludes me. A These numbers show the exact point of the sheer line. The first number is out from the centerline and the number in parentheses is up from the base line. In the first few printings of Canoecraft a simple calculation was required to find this number. We have now provided these numbers to make it easier - when you draw your stations it will become obvious.
