FAQ's: PRODUCT FEEDBACK

Scale Model Kits

As you invited "feedback" from kit builders, I thought I would take the opportunity to pass on some info which hopefully might be of use to you.

I recently completed building your Chestnut model, which if I say so myself turned out better than all expectations. I chose the Chestnut mainly because I have the canvass covered model which I puchased in 1961. It still has the original canvass.

I purchased your kit through Lee Valley, ( kind of pricey) if thats of any interest, with the idea of learning how to build the real thing.

I pass on a ccouple of things which you are likely aware of, but in the event you aren't here they are .

  • I used Windex to wet the wood when I had to bend and shape planking as well as buiding the stems. I found this especially usefull when doing the planking on the bottom of the canoe.Windex contains amonia which assists in making wood bendable.
  • I also used both thick and thin cyanoacrylate glue throughout. This is fast drying and I thought much easier to work with than regular wood glue. I think you suggested this at some point.
  • I used "needlepoint" canvass for the seats.Just looks like real cane seats.
  • I agree with you that it VERY important to read the instructions thoroughly before starting, so you know where you are going. I missed the reason to build two sets of stems early on as an example.
  • I also used #400 and #600 sandpaper in the finishing process. I am curious to know why you recommend using spar varnish rather than say varathane or urethane.I know a few yachting types who say they only use varnish but don't know why.
I live in Burlington (ONT) and have a cottage near Dorset so I look forward to dropping by one day.

cheers, mike

Boat-Building Courses

Ted and Joan,

I never thought I'd find my life in a thwart! Thank you both, so much, for just being you and making yourselves available for such and experience. By the way, if Tom left the Freedom, maybe we can make a deal. Maybe I can get visitation on weekends.

Ted, I'm really interested in the 20 foot kayak which you described as capable of engulfing my generous mid-section. Who wants an ole fast, sleek, drop-dead gorgeous canoe anyway? I think Ted Myers and I will start building in his shop and my brother from Boston wants to build a Guideboat. If you've got photos or drawings of the 20-footer, I sure like to see them.

These photos of Ted teaching and working captured something of the spirit. I'll send some more when I get them processed. I WILL keep in touch and thanks again.

Doug

Prospector

You guys are sadistic!

Great model, great project, and it took me almost as long to build as a full-size canoe! I really enjoyed it and it gave me a great appreciation for the Prospector as a boat.

Thank again for the entertainment.
Charlie
