BERLIN CANOE
The mold for this canoe sculpture was constructed
in our shop in January 2004. It was an interesting project. Steve
Killing designed the mold which was cut on a laser cnc machine. Ted
then planked it in white cedar and faired it . A map of Canada will
be carved into the hull before it is cast in bronze. The carving and
casting will take place in eastern Quebec. The artist John McEwen is
from Midland, Ontario.
This sculpture by John McEwen will be cast in bronze and installed in the Kanada Haus embassy in Berlin.
In order to cast in bronze a wooden plug needs to be built with some specific requirements. Among them are:
The outside surface needs to be non-fiberglassed wood so that it may be carved to add images and details. Hull thickness of the plug should be 5/16 - 3/8". Hull material and finish, if any, must be appropriate for carving. Double ribs 1" apart spaced at 25" centers must be built into the canoe so that the finished carved plug may be cut into 25" lengths for casting. A double internal keel must be installed to permit the plug to be cut along the centerline to further reduce the size of the pieces for casting. Both inside and outside surfaces will be used in the casting process, so thickness and details on botht the inside and outside are important.
The ribs will be approximately 1.5" in molded depth by 3/8" sided thickness.
