Building a woodstrip kayak in the eastern arctic
In April 2005 we travelled to northern Quebec to build a woodstrip
kayak with the teachers and students at Jaanimmark School in Kuujjuaq
on Ungava Bay. Our friends Eric Harris and Brenda Beck who produce
educational videos and dvds for their company Soft Science, offered to
film the project. We had a great time building the kayak and learning
about life in this community north of the tree line. Joan's brother
Mike has lived in Kuujjuaq for over 25 years and it was our first
opportunity to visit him and his family in their own homes. One day
Mike called us from his office overlooking the George River to tell us
that a herd of about a thousand caribou were passing by on the frozen
river - of course the kayak was abandoned as everyone rushed for their
snowmobiles to go take a look.
Soft Science produced a DVD of the construction of the kayak and it is
available for sale. The DVD is an informal look at building a kayak
and we think it is a good visual resource to use along with
Kayakcraft. The section on fiberglassing will be especially useful to
those who have not tried it. The DVD is available for purchase here.
