Getting Started
If this is your first boatbuilding project, where to get started could be your most challenging step.
We suggest you begin by reading Canoecraft or KayakCraft. Our building method is a series of simple steps in the most effective order. When you can see yourself performing these steps, you will have the confidence to begin.
Since building a boat is a commitment of your time and money, take your time choosing a design that will be right for you. Check out our Comparison Chart for additional info on designs.
After deciding on the boat you want to build, assembling the materials will be your next consideration. While your local building supply store will have some of the pieces, other components might be harder to source. Reading the book will tell you what pieces you have access to and what specialty parts you need to find.
Bear Mountain Boats can supply all the hard-to-find materials as well as complete boat kits. You can use the checklists below as a guide for purchasing. If you are able to mill your own planking and have the wood to work with, talk to us about supplying the epoxy resin and fiberglass cloth. On the other hand, if you don’t have the time, woodworking equipment, space or etc., a Bear Mountain Boat Kit could be the way for you to go.
If you run into any hurdles along the way, don't hesitate to contact us. You may want to pick up the Canoecraft Companion Video with Nick Offerman, or check out our Builder’s Forum, blog, and FAQ. You can also follow us on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube for regular updates from the boat-building community.
